44th Annual Accolade to be Presented During the 14th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Simulcast on TNT and TBS on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) announced that Charles Durning, the quintessential character actor and highly decorated World War II veteran, will receive the Guild s most prestigious tribute the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award for career achievement and humanitarian accomplishment. Durning will be presented the Award, given annually to an actor who fosters the finest ideals of the acting profession, at the 14th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards , which premieres live on TNT and TBS Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008, at 8 p.m.

ET/PT, 7 p.m. CT and 6 p.m. MT. In making the announcement, SAG President Alan Rosenberg said, Charles Durning is the perfect choice for the Life Achievement Award as Screen Actors Guild celebrates its 75th anniversary. Throughout his career, he has epitomized the art and grace of acting and brought something special to every role. He is above all things a great actor with the talent to which we all aspire: the power to create indelible characters.

That talent has earned Durning numerous accolades during his more than 50 years as a performer. He was honored with an Oscar nomination in 1983 for his musical turn as the tap-dancing Texas governor in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and again in 1984 for his lecherous Nazi Colonel Erhardt in the Brooksfilm remake of Ernst Lubitsch s To Be or Not To Be, a role which also brought him one of his four Golden Globe nominations. He made his film debut in 1965 in Harvey Middleman, Fireman, followed by appearances in I Walk the Line and two early Brian de Palma films, Hi, Mom (credited as Charles Durnham) and Sisters. He achieved breakout status in 1972 when, after seeing Durning on Broadway in Jason Miller s That Championship Season, George Roy Hill cast him as a corrupt police lieutenant in The Sting. Durning s nearly 100 feature roles include hostage negotiator Det. Moretti in Dog Day Afternoon (for which he received his first Golden Globe nomination), the villainous frogs-leg restaurant magnate in The Muppet Movie Tootsie” Home for the Holidays. For the Coen Brothers, Durning appeared in O Brother, Where Art Thou? and played the pivotal title role The Hudsucker Proxy . In 2000, as a member of the ensemble cast of David Mamet s State and Main, he was honored by the National Board of Review, the Online Film Critics Society and the Florida Film Critics Circle. That same year he starred in another Mamet screenplay, Lakeboat. along with Dennis Leary, whose father he has played for the past three years in 23 episodes of the FX hit Rescue Me . Other film credits include North Dallas Forty, The Greek Tycoon, When a Stranger Calls, Harry and Walter Go to New York, True Confessions, Twilight s Last Gleaming, The Final Countdown, The Choirboys, An Enemy of the People, Far North, The Man With One Red Shoe, Death and Texas, One Fine Day, V.I. Warshawski” and comic-strips-brought-to-life Brenda Starr and Dick Tracy, among many others. In 1975, Durning was honored with the first of eight Emmy nominations for his romantic turn opposite Maureen Stapleton in the television movie Queen of the Stardust Ballroom. Nominations followed for his performances in the miniseries Captains and the Kings (which also earned him a Golden Globe nomination) and the telefilms Attica and Death of a Salesman, the latter opposite Dustin Hoffman, whom he had earlier romanced in Tootsie. Durning was twice nominated for supporting actor Emmys during his 1990-1994 run as Dr. Harlan Elldridge in the comedy Evening Shade, which starred his friend and frequent collaborator Burt Reynolds. The two co-starred in the features Stick, Starting Over, Sharkey s Machine, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and Forget About It, as well as the Hard Time series of telefilms. The Television Academy also nominated Durning twice for guest performances: in 1995 for Homicide: Life on the Street and in 2005 for NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service. Durning starred as Supreme Court Justice Henry Hoskins in the television series First Monday, in the short-lived series Orleans, Eye to Eye and The Cop and the Kid, as well as early in his career in the daytime drama “Another World. His dozens of television guest-starring roles include his March 2007 appearance on Monk, seven appearances as Father Hubley on Everybody Loves Raymond and character arcs on Everwood, Family Guy, The Practice and Cybil. His more than 50 television movies include The Best Little Girl in the World, Crisis at Central High, The Rivalry, The Girls in their Summer Dresses and Other Stories by Irwin Shaw, four outings as Santa Claus, one as the Pope, one as Casey Stengel and roles in the televised versions of such classics as Look Homeward Angel, Mister Roberts, Dinner at Eight and Studs Lonigan.
He received a CableACE nomination for his performance as a southern prison camp warden in The Man Who Broke 1,000 Chains. Durning was born in Highland Falls, N.Y., on Feb. 28, 1923. Widowed when Durning was 12, his mother worked as a laundress at the U.S.
Military Academy in nearby West Point. As a teenage usher in a burlesque house, Durning was hired to replace a drunken second banana on stage, then hoofed his way through upstate New York as half of ballroom dancing act for 11 years. Durning s early career was punctuated by stints as an elevator operator, Western Union delivery boy, cab driver, bartender, night watchman, boxer and construction worker. His heroic yet horrifying experiences during World War II loomed large in shaping his 20s. He was in the first wave to land on Omaha Beach during the D-Day Normandy invasion on June 6, 1944, killing seven German gunners and suffering serious machine gun wounds to his right leg and shrapnel wounds over his body in that bloody battle. Later, he was stabbed eight times with a bayonet by a young German soldier, whom he killed with a rock in hand-to-hand combat. Taken prisoner during the Battle of the Bulge, he was one of a few survivors of the infamous attack on American POWs at Malmedy, Belgium, and was the sole survivor of 40 men who took out a German machine gun nest. For his valor he was honored with three Purple Hearts and a Silver Star. Although he had starred as a World War II veteran in the 1985 film Stand Alone, Durning did not speak publicly about his war experiences until the 50th anniversary of D-Day, when it was suggested by Durning s Evening Shade co-star Ossie Davis (SAG s 2000 Life Achievement Award recipient) that he appear in the National Memorial Day Concert, which Davis was hosting. Durning has since made the concert an annual appearance. For the anniversary, Durning also narrated The Discovery Channel s Normandy: The Great Crusade and read Ernest Hemmingway s account of the invasion in a CBS Reports D-Day special. Durning employed dance, speech and acting studies as part of his post-war recovery. In 2007, he was recognized as a Legend by the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, where he studied in the late 1940s. He was also educated at Columbia University and New York University. By the 1960s Durning had become a prolific actor on the New York stage and in regional and touring companies. He performed in some 35 productions with Joseph Papp s New York Shakespeare Festival, both in the Bard s work and in such contemporary mid- 70s premieres as In the Boom Boom Room and The Au Pair Man, opposite Julie Harris. For his work on Broadway, Durning has been honored with Tony and Drama Desk awards for the role of Big Daddy in the 1990 Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, starring Kathleen Turner; the Drama League Distinguished Performance Award for the 1997 revival of The Gin Game, which reunited him with Julie Harris; and a 1972 Drama Desk Award for That Championship Season. More recently, he starred in the 1996 revival of Inherit the Wind, opposite George C. Scott, and the 2000 revival of Gore Vidal s The Best Man.
He received the 2006 Lucille Lortell Award for Outstanding Featured Actor for Wendy Wasserstein s Third at Lincoln Center and played the title role in Trumbo: Red White and Blacklisted Off-Broadway in 2003. His numerous Off-Broadway and regional theatre credits include On Golden Pond, Sweet Bird of Youth, Prelude to a Kiss, Brigadoon and Glengarry Glen Ross. His upcoming films include Deal, his seventh film opposite Burt Reynolds; Polycarp, which premiered at the 2007 Hoboken Film Festival; and a starring role in Chatham. Dressed to Kill: Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce, Patricia Morison (1946 Movie) Tube. Duration : 71.52 Mins. DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Dressed to Kill (also known as Prelude to Murder or Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Code in the UK), is the last of fourteen films starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Doctor Watson.

Though not directly based on any of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Holmes stories, the film features several references to “A Scandal in Bohemia”, with Holmes and Watson discussing the recent publication of the story in The Strand Magazine, and the villain of the film using the same trick on Watson that Holmes uses on Irene Adler in the story.
The plot also bears some resemblance to “The Adventure of the Six Napoleons”, which had previously been used for the Rathbone-Bruce film The Pearl of Death.
Three cheap musical boxes (each one playing a subtly different version of “The Swagman”), manufactured in Dartmoor Prison, are sold at a local auction house. However, a criminal gang is determined to steal and recover all three, even if it means committing murder. Sherlock Holmes tries to recover the music boxes and crack the secret code contained in the tune before the gang can get what they want.

Dear Kari, I felt compelled to write in and offer my sincerest congratulations on the good looks. This, however, is truly a sad, sad, day. For you see Kari, I am writing you to say that I will never be writing you again. I know that this is our first official communiqué, but it is also our last.

Shhhhhh! Let me finish. I understand that the destruction of a bond as strong, as pithy and as tight as ours surely would be devastating for you as well as for me, but I must do it.

You see our bond has driven the wedge of insurrection between me and Sven, my other personality.

Sven is a tall blonde cable car driver with nationalistic tendencies and a flair for crochet. Despite his stunning good looks, his rudimentary language skills (both Swedish and Portuguese) usually hinder his progress with the ladies. He can play piano with his toes but hates the look of his feet. His ears are large and his forehead is even larger. Sven has seven fingers, three elbows and only one knee, which bends the wrong way. Despite his calm demeanor, Sven loses his temper every time the temperature reaches 73 degrees: Kelvin that is. He has given up on both Fahrenheit and Celsius because they are, in his words, “Symptomatic of a selfish culture driven to chase the almighty buck due the formalism of the government systems.” When Sven was a child he was beaten with his own hand and told repeatedly not to blink. When Sven turned 10 his parents fooled him into thinking he was twenty-one. He grew a goatee, developed a drinking habit and got an apartment in the mean streets of Swedenville, where he worked odd jobs to pay his bills. When Sven was twenty-five, he reached puberty and with this, he had his first sexual encounter.

His partner, a seven hundred pound Mongolian woman named Wilma, toyed with his emotions and left him a tattered shell of a man. When Sven turned thirty-eight, twenty-seven in actuality, he finally took a step in the right direction, he admitted he had a problem and got help. Better living through chemistry is now his motto.

The proper mix of Prozac and Melon Liqueur keeps his ions in proper balance. Sven lives a lonely existence, it’s just him and his pet rabbit named Forest Whitaker. Sven is to charm what toothpaste is to Europeans, non-existent. I think he fears our healthy relationship.

Kari, he’s never been so jealous before. When I asked him if he was upset by my new relationship with you, he said, “Da.” The clincher was when I told him that I would call it off immediately and he replied, “Da. Gut.” I feel horrible for letting you down. I would just like to let you know that I am normal. Well, as normal as a guy with two personalities can be. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices, unfortunately you are caught in the wake of this sacrifice. All that s left is for me to say goodbye and let you know I think you did an excellent job on the good looks. Remorsefully yours, Orpheous Roy http://www.kariwuhrer.net/

Google Inc is 6th in the list Wmaster Wmaster , behind Goldman Sachs, $627,730;University of California, $523,120; JPMorgan Chase & Co,$398,021; Citigroup Inc,$393,899; UBS AG, $378,400; Wmaster just slightly ahead of Harvard University, $369,802. Microsoft Corp donated $276,925 and ranked 15th among the top contributors.Did Google indeed Wmaster $373,212 to the Obama camp? The answer is yes, but the money is Wmaster a corporate contribution but is the cumulative contribution from Google employees. Google Corporation did not give a cent and it does not run out of representatives in online forums who are quick to explain this.Still with Google personnel leaning towards Obama, some concerns were raised about McCain getting shortchanged in Google searches and his general visibility in the Google-led World Wide Web.

No this will not happen, one says, Google search algorithms have been well tested for security and reliability and cannot be tweaked by one or two employees. A naughty suggestion comes out to ask the AdWords team to raise the minimum bids for McCain and GOP related keywords, making them less visible in the AdSense feeds. Not many are really surprised Wmaster Google (and Microsoft) employees will lean overwhelmingly towards Barack Obama.

These are “highly educated younger people who are smart enough (and “tuned in” enough) to know that voting for McCain is absolutely unreasonable.” Most voices in the online communities in fact Wmaster to root for Obama and no further search engine manipulations are needed. Whereas Obama is known to be active posters in online forums and walks around comfortably with his Goldberry gadget, McCain openly admits that he does not know how to use the mouse and the keyboard (as if that is something to be proud of).

He also adds that he leaves all his email works to his wife. All these do not speak well of McCain’s learning curve on things new and unfamiliar. Too bad for him the world is not perfect (understatement applied), otherwise with his age and experience, McCain would have been the run away winner in the US 2008 election even this early. Even while he whines occasionally that this “young man Obama” has “got everything all wrong”, there is not a thankful younger generation who cares to listen.More than fifty years ago, the irrepressible English philosopher Bertrand Russell warned us to be wary of anyone of who touts his 50 years of experience because he could be talking only of 1 year of experience repeated 50 times. Russell was not one who would go for more of the same. If he were alive today, he would be one with Google and the multitude worldwide who chant in their hearts “Change We Can Believe In.”Andy Gimpaya The UP Ibalon Bicol The UP Ibalon Web Community.

The life of a 1960′s playboy in London is on full display in Alfie. Michael Caine is the title character who thinks he has a good thing going, [..]

The life of a 1960′s playboy in London is on full display in Alfie. Michael Caine is the title character who thinks he has a good thing going, stringing along several women at the same time, making sure to break it off at the first sign a girl is beginning to get serious. A devout hedonist, Alfie’s cares are simple: have a good time and avoid responsibility.

Were it not for Caine’s terrific cajoling performance and his character’s brilliant use of breaking the fourth wall to speak directly to the audience, we wouldn’t like Alfie much. In fact, he’s about as callous as it gets when it comes to the feelings of his companions, and rather despicable when you think about it. But somehow we can’t quite hate the man. Despite his self-centered nature, we suspect that deep down there’s some good that will eventually reveal itself.

The film shows him take the first steps to self-awareness, though by the end we aren’t really sure how far along that road he has come. Michael Caine as Alfie. “What’s it all about?” Director Gilbert Lewis wastes no time cuing us in on Alfie. The film opens with a shot of dogs prowling the night streets, a subtle commentary on Alfie’s character. A terrific jazz score featuring tenor sax by Sonny Rollins connotes Alfie’s devil-may-care attitude. The camera pans to a parked car. We hear a couple inside, obviously going at it. The tryst is interrupted and Alfie emerges.

He spots the camera and begins to talk, making a joke. The well-designed sequence lets you know the story will be told from Alfie’s perspective, and you are in on his take. Women are merely objects. He calls them “birds,” even using a dehumanizing “it,” when referring to them. This first conquest is Siddie, a married woman who he soon drops because as he explains, she’s getting too hot. He tells Siddie to treat her husband well; there’s no reason to make anyone unhappy if you can avoid it. Alfie’s next stop is to see Gilda, who he tells us will never be a number 1. She’s a sweet girl, but when he learns she’s pregnant, he never thinks of marrying her. She gives birth, and perhaps a little surprisingly, Alfie doesn’t abandoned the child but begins to display real affection for the first time. It’s clear he likes being a dad–at least on the weekend. He walks the baby in the park, brings presents to comfort him when he cries, and later plays with him on the beach. If it could end with this, he’d be happy. However, it’s not enough for Gilda. Desperate to give the child a proper, every-day father, she eventually turns to Humphrey, a boring bus conductor. Humphrey loves her and is willing to act serve as the child’s father. They will eventually have their own baby, and in the most poignant moment of the film, Alfie watches its baptism in secret, wondering if that is the picture of true happiness. Throughout, the script is quite funny, especially for American viewers not used to Cockney slang. Of Gilda, Alfie says she’s “lookin’ mumsie.” A health scare sends Alfie for some rest at a sanitarium. But even here he can’t change his behavior, connecting with a nurse while his roommate, another patient named Harry, and Harry’s wife, Lily (Vivien Merchant), sit embarrassed in the next bed. Harry scolds him, “You beast.” Later, Alfie shows how rotten he is by seducing Lily. Looking innocently at the camera he says, “Well, what harm can it do? Old Harry will never know. And even if he did, he shouldn’t begrudge me – or her, come to that. And it’ll round off the tea nicely.” Lily will become pregnant and Alfie pays for an illegal abortion. It’s a life-altering event, though Alfie doesn’t immediately realize it. In a harrowing sequence Merchant does a great job conveying the pain and humiliation of it all. Alfie justifies his actions: “My understanding of women only goes as far as the pleasure. When it comes to the pain I’m like any other bloke – I don’t want to know.” But he finally conveys some honest human emotion, crying when he sees the unborn foetus and later lamenting his part in it, confessing to a friend he committed murder. Alfie in action at the sanitarium. Chastened, Alfie goes to Ruby, another woman with whom he is carrying on. He tells us she “is in lovely condition.” Played wonderfully by Shelley Winters, she knows how to play the game as well as her confident paramour. In the film’s best scene, she gives Alfie a taste of his own medicine. Shocked to find another man in her bed, Alfie asks what the man has that he doesn’t. “He’s younger,” she explains simply. A cold slap in the face. Caine and Winters. The film ends where it began, at night along the river. Alfie runs into Siddie, whom he hasn’t seen in ages. She rejects his advances, and he gives another soliloquy before walking off with the same dog that appeared at the beginning. Maybe he’s learned something after all. You know what? When I look back on my little life and the birds I’ve known, and think of all the things they’ve done for me and the little I’ve done for them, you’d think I’ve had the best of it along the line. But what have I got out of it? I’ve got a bob or two, some decent clothes, a car, I’ve got me health back and I ain’t attached. But I ain’t got me peace of mind – and if you ain’t got that, you ain’t got nothing. I dunno. It seems to me if they ain’t got you one way they’ve got you another. So what’s the answer? That’s what I keep asking myself – what’s it all about? Know what I mean? This is a unique film and Caine gives the best performance of his career, snagging an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. It’s a shame, but his timing stunk. He had no chance given that year’s competition, including Paul Scofield, who won for A Man for All Seasons, and Richard Burton for Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Overall the film earned five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress (Merchant), Best Music, and Best Writing. Merchant’s other memorable film role came in Hitchcock’s Frenzy (1973), where she played a police detective’s wife, dispensing unsolicited advice while serving godawful dinners. The familiar title song is by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. In the American release Cher sang, and in the original English release, it was just instrumental. Dionne Warwick scored the big pop hit version. (In the inferior 2004 remake, Mick Jagger performs a terrific closing song, Old Habits Die Hard).

Frederick Winslow Taylor (March 20, 1856 – March 21, 1915) was an American engineer who sought to improve industrial efficiency.Taylor was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania to a wealthy family. He had intended a university education at Harvard, but ill-health forced him to consider an alternative career. In 1874 he became an apprentice machinist, learning of factory conditions at grass-roots level.

He qualified as an engineer due to evening study. His first attempts at reorganising management was at Bethlehem Steel, which he was forced to leave in 1901 after antagonisms with other managers.
He then wrote a book, Shop Management, which did well.Taylor believed that contemporary management was amateurish, and should be studied as a discipline; that workers should co-operate (and hence would not need Trade Unions); and that the best results would come from the partnership between a trained and qualified management and a co-operative and innovative workforce.
Each side needed the other. He is known for coinage of the term scientific management in his article The Principles of Scientific Management published in 1911.
